A Look Into The Future

June 11th, 2014

If you’ve never experienced a New Tech School, we get that it may be a difficult concept to grasp. Group projects. No bells. Trusting students to collaborate. Not the typical high school approach. So, we sent Jerod Clapp, a reporter with the News and Tribune, to Columbus Signature Academy, a New Tech School just about an hour away, to experience the concept firsthand.

Jerod shared about his experience in a series of articles. And it’s so good, we just had to share it with you.

“It’s not going to be the posterboard, gluestick presentation that we’re all used to,” Allred said. “That’s not how this works, it’s about how you really work. In the 21st century, in today’s workplace, you have so much of that collegial problem-solving going on — how you work when you’re in an office building in Louisville or Southern Indiana.”

How You Can Help: Make a Contribution

June 8th, 2014

Renaissance Academy is part of the New Technology Network, schools across the country that are changing the way students are being educated for the 21st Century.

This model has been tremendously successful and we believe it will have a big impact on Southern Indiana. We have invested significantly in Renaissance Academy and we need to support of the community along the way to help us on this new endeavor.

Contributions from individuals, groups and organizations are welcome at any level and will be recognized in the new Renaissance Academy facility on a graphic wall.

We have a wish list of items for the school that you can choose from or you can make a general donation.

How You Can Help: Be a Guest Presenter

We strive to provide students with as much diversity in learning opportunities as possible. This includes direct instruction from experts in our community.

Our facilitators need guest presenters to help our students gain greater understanding of the real-world application of their learning.

Guest presenters will have the choice to give a presentation at the school or through an online meeting tool such as Skype.

Being a guest presenter is an opportunity to share what you do and your expertise with young people and these presentations add authenticity to the classroom.

You can bring samples of your work to share, tell our students about your job and how it applies to what they are learning in school, provide a day-in-the-life explanation of your career and give direct instruction on the content we’re teaching and how it applies to your work.

If you are interested in being a guest speaker, contact or 812.258.9040.

How You Can Help: Be a Mentor

June 6th, 2014

As I have been out and about in our community meeting with leaders and sharing about Renaissance Academy, many people have expressed an interest in helping us on our venture to better educate students for the 21st century.

There are many ways to support the work of Renaissance Academy. In my next few blogs, I’d like to share with you more about those opportunities.

First, we need mentors. A mentor is someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge. Our community is filled with bright thinkers and talented people. We hope to connect those individuals with our students through a mentoring program that matches local business and community members with small groups of students during their freshman year.

Renaissance Academy mentors will be invited into the school twice a month to meet with the small groups. Mentors will provide a valuable real-world perspective of the work our students do every day.

To be an effective mentor, you simply need to be present and participate. You don’t need any special skills, just a sincere interest in the success of our students and a caring attitude.

As an active partner in an ongoing relationship with your group of learners, your guidance and advice will help them reach their professional goals. Mentoring provides an opportunity for you to affect the future and the satisfaction of contributing to the success of another person. You can help our learners be successful, active participants in the 21st century.

Mentors help our learners: improve self-esteem, stay in school, connect with resources not easily accessible otherwise, find and keep a job, increase academic skills, build confidence and more.

Sign up for our mentoring program today and help us prepare the next generation of students for the 21st century workforce. Contact us at or 812.258.9040.
